Life and Death by Stephenie Meyer

Slight disclaimer: This is not a review. This is a snarky rant. I have not read the book, and this is much more of a discussion topic, or, depending on how you look at it, a place for me to whine. There shouldn't be any spoilers, or things like that because I haven't read the book; this should be safe for everyone to read, if they so desire. That being said, I will be complaining about, and possibly critiquing, Stephenie Meyer and her books. If that is something that you cannot handle, or just don't want to read, please keep scrolling- there are lots of other book reviews on this website to enjoy! However, if you'd like to read this little spiel, please go right ahead.

It has happened. Honestly, I always said that Stephenie Meyer was not done with the Twilight universe, and I have finally been proven correct yet again. I do not dislike Stephanie Meyer. I don't love her, but I also don't have any problems with her. My issue with Stephanie Meyer is what she writes- over and over again. First off, Stephenie Meyer has been riding on Twilight's success for around a decade now. She has four books in the Twilight series, a companion novel for Bree Tanner, this new gender-swapped copy, a new Twilight book in the works (a book from Edward's view, hopefully she'll finish it), and one other sci-fi book- The Host- that was supposed to be trilogy, but she never completed because she didn't want to kill people off (what excuses are these?).

Stephenie Meyer is not a bad person for writing only Twilight books, okay? She just isn't. It's a successful series, people keep demanding more, and so she delivers. But I'm not really okay with the fact that she only writes these books. It's different for someone like Cassandra Clare. Cassandra Clare has written a lot of books with a lot of different characters, in different worlds, in different times. Honestly, Cassandra Clare has created such a broad world that she could write only in the Shadowhunter world forever and never get boring. Stephenie Meyer, on the other hand, has created a supremely narrow world. She has created only a few characters for us to read about, and her world is a narrow modern-day city in the middle of a rainy state- not much to go off of.
I think if Stephenie Meyer actually finished anything that she committed to, it would be a different story. The Host is book one in a trilogy. A TRILOGY. Book Number 2- The Seeker- was supposed to be published in 2012. Guess what year it is? Certainly not 2012! In fact, many people have resigned themselves to the fact that The Host Trilogy will never be completed. Now, I'm sure you're thinking, "Stephenie Meyer must have a good reason! Authors wouldn't leave us hanging like that, right?" WRONG! Stephenie Meyer has stated that she is afraid to finish the book because she will have to kill off characters and doesn't want to deal with the negative criticism of that. WHAT THE HECK?
When people begin writing books, they make a commitment to carry things out to fruition- to complete the danged series. I would feel differently if Stephenie Meyer was a brand-new author who had never dealt with criticism ever before, but Twilight is one of the most controversial books on the globe! Stephenie Meyer has dealt with her fair share of negative criticism and this excuse not to finish her series really angers me. Not because I want to read the book, but because she should finish what she said she would start. It's just cruel to leave so many people hanging. And don't get me started on the whole Midnight Sun fiasco.
I don't hate Stephenie Meyer, but I'm tired of her. She needs to finish what she started, and start writing something new.

  1. Love the post, Nadia!!! I'm totally with you! I want her to finish Midnight Sun, and if she ever did, I would certainly buy it because I feel like I would owe that to my 12 year old self lol, but I am very tired of her. I bought Life and Death because I thought she was going to write a funny version of Twilight. I was expecting it to be hilarious because it really could have been. Instead, it turned out to be the most sexist book I've ever read and I will never pick it up again. I was disappointed. This book really could have been great/hilarious. But no, she was totally serious throughout the whole thing. AND SHE CAN'T SIT THERE AND TELL ME THAT SHE COULDN'T FINISH THE OTHER HALF OF MIDNIGHT SUN WHEN SHE COULD WRITE A FULL BOOK INSTEAD!! TOTALLY BS!

    Okay, rant over.
    Great article girl! ;)
